Dear Bruce:

\JIn spite of the time that has elapsed since I wrote you last, I have little
in the way of new information with respect to the application of signature
tables to speech recognition. I did have a student working along these lines for
a while but he made absolutely no progress and finally switched to something
entirely different.
So your student seems to have a clear field. I would be very glad for you
and for him to make some contributions along these lines.

As far as my own efforts are concerned I too have been doing other
things. During the time I was away our financial support dwindled to
such an extent that I could no longer keep any assistants and it
seemed wise to temporarly work on something else.
One of my activities has been to improve the on-line editor which we
use. I really think that our editor is now one of the better
ones around. It is very easy to use, it is very fast, and it does
many useful things, such, for example, as making it easy to copy or
transfer text items from other files to any desired location in a
file being edited.

  We have been doing
quite a bit of traveling, to Europe, Russia, Mexico, Alaska etc.
I am trying to slow down a bit and do something besides work all
the time. Never-the-less it seems that I simply get myself even busier.

On the home front, we too have moved but nothing as exciting as a new
house. We have finally moved into a retirement community, a place
called The Sequoias, that accomodates about 300 people.
The Sequoias is located in a
small community called Portola Valley which is actually nearer my
office than our former home was, but in the other direction toward
the coastal range. We are in a delightful
rural environment with many good walking trails nearby, many through
deep redwoods, even up to the top of the ridge behind us at an elevation
of two thousand feet if one wants. I have become quite a hiker, that is for me.

We have our own apartment of three rooms and bath located in one of
the 25 or so separate one-storied buildings that are scattered around
on a well-landscaped campus-like piece of ground. There is a central
dining room where we get our meals, a large lounge with a fairly
good library, four parlors for the use of people who wish to
entertain larger groups than their individual quarters will accomodate,
a moderately large hall where concerts and a variety of different
kinds of entertainment are held, a very nice wood-working shop, a
ceramics shop, a lapidary shop, an electronice shop, a class room
where painting classes and the like are held, a billiard room, a
bowling green, a croquet green and a shuffle board court. About the
only thing lacking that I would like is a swimming pool, but then we
still belong to the University Club, which has one.

The chief attraction of the place for people of our age is the fact
that complete medical care for the rest of our lives is a part of the
deal. We have our own hospital and we can use any of the doctors in
the Palo Alto Medical Clinic, where we have been going
anyway. When one is indisposed a nurse will come around to see you
and bring the local doctor if necessary. If you are not sick enough
to go to the hospital but too sick to come to the central dining
room, tray meals are brought to your apartment.

Bernice likes the absence of having to get meals, even when well. We
do have a small kitchenette affair where one can do a limited amount
of meal preparation on occasion and there are small kitchens
associated with each of the four parlors where one can do more if one
wishes. One can even give dinner parties doing your own cooking if
one wants or one can have them catered.

I did not intend to bore you so with such a complete discription of
The Sequoias, but maybe you might be interested.

\F6Let me take this occasion to extend to you and your entire family the season's
greetings.\.

\F5\CA VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS
